Landscape Tools: Why are They Important for Landscaping Projects?

By Jeremy Szechenyi

Landscaping is a great way to improve the appearance of your yard, and landscape tools are essential for any landscaping project. There are many tools out there, some made for one specific job. The best thing you can do is to purchase a basic group of tools that you can multi-task with, and add specialized tools one at a time as you need them. The basic group of tools is listed below.

The first tool group is the shovel.

The second tool group is the rake.

Group 3 is the lopper, shear or pruner.

Group 4 is the garden cart or wheel barrel.

Group 1 is the shovel, which can be one of the most important tools for most. It is basically two parts, a handle and a flat piece of metal on the end. There are three types of shovel, each which varies by the shape of the metal. The first is the pointed or round tip shovel, which slices in to soil well. It is primarily used for digging. The second is the narrow shovel, which also digs, but makes smaller holes and work well in tight spaces. The last is the flat shovel, which is great for scooping. It does not dig into soil well, but has a larger surface area for moving things like gravel or sand.

Group 2 is the rake. It has a long handle with the rake head attached. Two main types are commonly seen, the leaf rake and bow rake. The leaf rake has thinner prongs. These pick up leaves and lighter material, but do not damage the ground below. The bow rake is heavier and sturdier, meant for moving heavy items like rocks and gravel.

The pruner, shear or lopper is the third group of tools, which trim and clip. Long grass shears have long blades that cut well through light material. Loppers are made for power, and to cut through thick branches and tree limbs. Small pruners are very common, and work well for smaller, tough items.

The fourth tool group is the wheel barrel or garden cart. These both carry large amounts of bulky materials for easy movement from place to place. Wheel barrels traditionally maneuver on one wheel, which makes them able to move around tighter corners. A garden cart is normally on two wheels, which makes it easier to balance but harder to maneuver around.

If you plan to undertake any landscaping project, whether big or small, you will need some tools. The basic tool groups listed and explained above will give you the ability to perform many tasks outside, and successfully complete your project. - 30234
